Layaway is a way of buying something when you cannot pay all the money today. You give the shop a small amount now; they keep the thing for you; you pay the rest later, then you take it home. It is especially American shop English. You put a toy or a sofa on layaway. Though actually, people sometimes turn it into a verb (“I'll layaway it”), but that solid verb was built back from the noun and is not the careful form; the usual way is still “put it on layaway” or “lay it away.” It is not a loan. You do not walk out with the goods until you have paid in full — that is the whole point.
