A lay-off is when a company sends workers home because there is not enough work — not because those people did a bad job. In the careful, older meaning it is for a time: the factory is quiet, so you are laid off until orders come back. Though actually, in American English today a layoff often just means you lost your job in a cut, and you may never be asked back. Newspapers write layoff, lay-off, or, for the verb, lay off. It is a work-and-news word. Being laid off is different from being : usually means the boss says you did something wrong.
lay-off 指的是公司因為工作量不足，讓員工暫時或長期離開工作崗位，原因在工作量，不是員工表現差。依照比較傳統的用法，它是暫時的，例如工廠沒有訂單時，員工會「be laid off」，等訂單回來再上班。
但現在美式英文裡，layoff 常常只是指被裁員，而且可能不會再被叫回去，所以要看上下文判斷是暫時還是永久。報紙常寫 layoff 或 lay-off，動詞則是 lay off。這是職場和新聞常用的字。
它和 fired 不一樣：fired 通常是老闆認為你做錯了什麼，而 laid off 的重點是公司缺工作，員工本身沒有錯。
