A lay-by is a short extra strip beside a road where a driver can pull off and stop — to rest, check a map, or wait. You see it on signs in Britain, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. It is not a big rest stop with shops; often it is just a bay. In the United States people say pull-off or turnout, so American English may never use this word. Though actually, in some older British and Australian shops, lay-by also meant paying a little now and collecting the thing later — like American . Same spelling, different life. The road sense is the one you meet in driving English.
lay-by 指路邊一段短的額外空間，讓駕駛靠邊停下來休息、看地圖或等待，常見於英國、愛爾蘭、澳洲與紐西蘭的路標。它通常只是一個小凹槽，不像有商店的休息站；美式多說「pull-off」或「turnout」。另外，在一些舊式英國或澳洲商店裡，lay-by 指先付部分款項、之後再取貨，類似美式的 layaway。拼法相同，但開車時說的是路邊停車的意思。
