Laxity is when people are not strict enough — about rules, work, safety, or how they should behave. If a school shows laxity, teachers let bad things slide. If a company shows laxity on safety, someone may get hurt. It is a rather formal, written word; in speech people more often say they are too slack, or not careful enough. It is almost always a criticism. Though actually, a little laxity can sound almost kind — they were not hard about the deadline — but in news and reports it usually means someone failed in their duty.
