A person who has been given a high prize or honour. You meet it most often in set titles: a Nobel laureate is someone who has won a Nobel Prize; a Poet Laureate is a poet chosen by a country or a city to hold that title for a time. Newspapers, schools, and award nights use it; friends almost never say it over dinner. It can sit in front of a noun too (a laureate scientist), but the person-noun is the usual way. It feels formal and a little grand — the special word for a prize-winner when the prize is famous. Though actually, the old picture is not a medal: Romans put a crown of laurel leaves on winners and on great poets.

組成Borrowed in the late 1400s from Latin laureātus, “wearing a laurel crown.” Latin laurea was a laurel wreath — a high reward given to poets and later to winners coming home in triumph — plus -ātus, an ending meaning “having” or “wearing.” That goes back to laureus “of laurel,” from laurus “laurel.” English later also made a verb by treating -ate as a verb ending. French lauréat is a close cousin.
