A latte is a coffee drink made with — that is the strong, short coffee — and a lot of steamed milk on top. You can mean the drink or the cup of it. Dictionaries sometimes call it “very strong coffee with milk,” but the messy truth is kinder to the milk: the is strong, yet there is so much milk that the cup tastes milder and creamier than a , which has more foam and less milk. In a café, latte is everyday, slightly trendy speech. People order vanilla lattes, iced lattes, and so on; the extra flavour sits on the same idea. Though actually, in Italian, latte only means milk. If you ask for “a latte” in Italy, you may get a glass of milk, not coffee. In English the coffee is understood, because we è latte, “milk coffee.”
