A lathe is a machine that holds a piece of wood or metal and turns it round and round while a sharp tool cuts it. That is how people make table legs, bowls, screws, and other round things. The same word works as a verb: to lathe something is to shape it on that machine. It belongs in workshops and factories, not in everyday chat. On the page it is one letter away from , the thin wooden strip used under plaster; they name different tools of the trade. Older English also had other words spelled lathe — a verb meaning invite, from Old English laþian, and a district of a county, from Old English lǣþ — but those are not this machine, and you will not meet them in ordinary modern talk. When someone says lathe now, they mean the turning machine.
