Latex is a milky white liquid that comes from certain trees, especially the rubber tree. When it dries or is treated, it becomes rubber, which is why we get things like rubber gloves, balloons, and some paints from it. In everyday life, you'll most often meet the word on labels — 'latex gloves', 'latex paint', or 'latex allergy', because some people's skin reacts badly to it. There's also a completely different 'LaTeX', a computer program used for writing documents with lots of maths symbols, but that's pronounced differently and has nothing to do with rubber.
