Lassitude is tiredness with the life taken out of it: not only sleepy, but a lack of energy and a lack of interest, so you cannot be bothered to start. It can follow illness, heat, a long grief, or a stretch of doing nothing that matters. Doctors and careful writers like the word; it sounds formal, even a little old-fashioned, and you will meet it more in books than in the school corridor. In ordinary talk people say worn out, drained, or “I have no energy.” It names a state of the body and the mind together — the limbs feel heavy, and the will feels heavy too. It is not on purpose, though from the outside the two can look alike.

組成Borrowed from French lassitude, from Latin lassitūdō (“faintness, weariness”), from lassus (“faint, weary”). Some scholars have wondered whether lassus is connected with English late; that is only a perhaps, not a sure family link.
