Lasagne is an Italian baked dish. You layer wide, flat sheets of pasta with a sauce — often meat, sometimes only vegetables — and cheese, then bake it until the top is golden and the inside is soft. In Britain the usual spelling is lasagne; in American English you will nearly always see lasagna. Both names mean the same food on the plate. Though actually, in Italian, lasagna is one pasta sheet and lasagne is more than one; English mostly ignores that and uses either spelling for the whole dish. It is ordinary home and café food, not high formal language, though the Italian name still makes it feel a little special. People also stretch the word a little: vegetable lasagne, seafood lasagne — same layered idea, different filling.
