Larval describes a young insect that still has a soft, tube-like body and has not yet grown wings. A is the larval form of a butterfly; a is the larval form of a fly. At this stage the insect often looks nothing like the adult — it is busy eating and growing, and only later will it change shape. You will mostly meet the word in school science, nature programmes, and biology writing. It is a describing word: we say a larval mosquito, or the larval stage, not “a larval” on its own. Though actually, scientists also use it for the early water-living stage of some other animals, such as certain frogs, and academic writers sometimes stretch it to mean “very early and not yet formed,” as in the larval stage of an idea. That last use is not everyday talk.
組成larva + -al (the describing ending). Larva is from Latin; that Latin word also meant a ghost or a mask, probably because the grown insect is still hidden inside this form.
