The lapels are the two flaps on the front of a coat or jacket that join the collar and fold back on each side of the chest. You see the inside face of the cloth there. A suit jacket almost always has them; a round-neck jumper does not. People pin a flower or a small badge on the left lapel. Tailors have names for the shapes — notch, peak, shawl — though you do not need those names to use the word. In careful talk it is a clothes-and-tailor word; in everyday talk someone may just say “the front of the jacket.” Though actually, people often say “collar” for everything at the top. The collar goes round the neck; the lapels are the folded parts below it, on the chest.
組成From lap (a flap of cloth that folds over) + -el (a diminutive suffix, “a little one”). So a lapel is a small lap of cloth.
