Laos is a country in mainland Southeast Asia. China is to the north, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, Thailand and Myanmar to the west. It has no coast: you cannot reach the sea without crossing another country. The capital is . The main people and the main language are Lao. English took the country name from French Laos, which is a plural of Lao, from the Lao name itself. In careful English, Laos is the country and Lao is the people, the language, and the adjective — though actually even native speakers mix these up. Official English sometimes says Lao PDR.
