    Landless means owning no land. It is not a joke about someone who lives in a flat; it is a serious word for people — often farmers, labourers, or families pushed off the soil — who work the earth but do not own a piece of it. You meet it in history, news, and talk about poverty or reform: landless peasants, the landless poor. It does not mean ‘without a country’ (that is stateless) and it does not mean ‘not on land’ (that would be at sea). The tone is plain and a little political; you would not call a city student landless just because they rent a room. English has had this pairing for a very long time.

組成land + -less (‘without’). From Middle English londlees, from Old English landlēas. Dutch landeloos and German landlos are built the same way.
