A landau is an old kind of horse carriage with four wheels and a roof that folds back, so the people inside can ride covered or open to the sky. The roof is the special part: it comes in two halves that fold away from the middle, not like a simple one-piece hood. You mostly meet the word in history, costume dramas, and royal parades — Britain still brings landaus out for weddings and state days — not in ordinary street talk. It feels formal and a bit antique. Later, car makers borrowed the look and even stuck fake ‘landau bars’ on the sides of cars to remind people of those folding hinges; that is a styling echo, not a horse carriage. Do not picture a modern convertible and stop there: a landau is first a horse-drawn coach, and a rather grand one.
