1. 1

A lamp-post is a tall pole that holds a light over a street or another public place, so people can see at night. You also see it written as one word, lamppost. In everyday talk many people just say for the whole thing; lamp-post picks out the pole itself. You can walk into one, lock a bike to one, or stand under one. Though actually, in stories a lamp-post can turn up in a strange place — a wood, a field — and it is still this same street pole with a lamp on top, not a lamp you carry or set on a desk.
