To lambast someone or something is to criticise them very hard, usually where other people can hear or read it. A paper may lambast a new law; a may lambast a film. It is not a polite disagreement — it is a public beating with words. You also see the longer spelling lambaste; they are the same verb. It feels a little or old-fashioned, and rather strong for everyday chat, where people more often say slam, tear into, or criticise . Though actually, it is still useful when you want the attack to sound serious. It is about speech and writing, not hitting with your hands.
