The lambada is a Brazilian partner dance that went around the world as a pop craze in the late 1980s. Two people hold each other very close and move their bodies, especially their hips, in time. The mood is sexy, , and a bit of a spectacle. The name is borrowed from Portuguese lambada, which first meant a strong slap or blow; the dance took the word, and English kept it for the dance and for the famous song. You do not need it for everyday talk, but you will see it in music, film, and ‘dances of the world’ lists. Though actually, it is not the Greek letter lambda, which only looks a little like it on the page.
