Lagging is a special thick material wrapped around a water pipe, a tank, or a boiler so heat does not escape — or so frost does not get in. In British English this is the ordinary word for that wrapping; you lag the before winter. It may look like a fat soft sleeve, or like fibre and foil bound on with tape. Though actually, American English more often says insulation, and lagging is also, in another life, the -ing form of lag meaning “falling behind” (lagging sales, a student who is lagging). This entry is only the pipe-cover meaning. The two ideas look the same on the page, which is messy, but the ’s lagging is a thing you can touch.
