    You will almost only meet this word in bill of lading. That is a shipping document: it says what cargo was loaded, who sent it, and who should receive it. It works as a receipt, a contract, and a paper of title — though actually, lawyers still argue which of those it is in each case. In trade you will see B/L. Lading itself is an old word for loading cargo onto a ship; everyday English now says loading. We keep lading almost only in this set phrase. A bill of lading is not a bill you pay.
