A formal, adjective: often crying, full of tears, or liable to make other people cry — a lachrymose old man, a lachrymose film, a lachrymose speech. You would not say it to a crying child; you would sound as if you had swallowed a dictionary. Though actually English already has and sad, which do almost all the same work in ordinary life. Keep this one for writing, or for a slightly dry joke about how a story is.

組成A learned borrowing from Latin lachrymosus / lacrimosus: lacrima (“tear”) + -osus (“-ful”), so “full of tears.” That Latin tear-word is an old cousin of English tear (the water from your eye); you cannot hear English tear inside lachrymose.
