Fine open decorative work: either real lace — thread made into a net of patterns — or something that only looks like it: iron lacework on a balcony, frost on a window, a spider's web. A little old-fashioned or literary when it means the fabric itself; in everyday talk people often just say lace. When it means a lace-like pattern in metal or stone, the word still feels natural.
