A labradoodle is a dog bred from a Labrador and a poodle — or from dogs that already come from that mix. People started breeding them as a so-called designer dog, hoping for the Labrador's kind, eager nature and the poodle's coat, which often sheds less. Though actually the mix does not come out the same every time: some look and act more like Labs, some more like poodles, and a labradoodle is not a promise that someone with a dog allergy will be fine. The word is everyday — pet shops, breeders, family talk. In kennel-club papers you may still see “Labrador–poodle cross,” because some clubs do not treat it as a breed of its own.
