A labourer is someone whose job is hard on the body — lifting, digging, carrying, mixing, building — not sitting at a desk. On a building site the labourer is the person shifting bags and clearing , not the one drawing the plans. A farm labourer does the same kind of work in fields. The word is ordinary British English; American English usually . Though actually it can sound a little old, or a little class-marked: many people now say construction worker, and a skilled or carpenter may not call themselves a labourer at all. It names the kind of work, not how good someone is at it.
