In this meaning, Kursk is not the city — it is a Russian nuclear submarine of that name. In August 2000 it sank in the Barents Sea during a training exercise. All 118 people on board died. Some sailors lived for a time after the blast, waiting in the back of the ship, but help did not reach them. Many people, in Russia and outside, felt the government was too slow to take foreign help and too slow to tell the truth. It became the worst disaster for a Russian ship, and a bitter memory of that year. The boat was named after the Russian city of Kursk, itself named for the Kur River. When English speakers say “the Kursk,” they almost always mean this sinking, not the city.
