    Kupang is a city on the island of Timor. dictionaries often call it the capital of Timor, and that is how older English books talk. Though actually, Timor is one island with two political lives. The west side is part of Indonesia; Kupang is the main city there, the capital of that Indonesian province. The east side is its own country, Timor-Leste (East Timor), and that country’s capital is , not Kupang. So “capital of Timor” here means the big city of (West) Timor, not the capital of the country East Timor. The two names sit very close, and mixing them up is easy.
