1. 1

A krona is the money used in Sweden, and English often uses the same spelling for Iceland’s money too. In Sweden the usual plural is kronor: you pay with many kronor, not many kronas. One krona is a small unit on its own — a snack, a bus ride, or a book will be tens or hundreds of them. The name means crown in Swedish, like the crown a king or queen wears, though actually that old picture is just sitting inside the word now; you do not need a royal story to spend it. Do not mix it up with the krone, which is how Denmark and Norway spell their crown money. Same family of names, different countries, and the coins are not worth the same. In careful writing, Iceland’s money is often spelled króna, with a mark over the o, so you can tell it apart from Sweden’s. Banks treat them as two different currencies.
