In old Norse stories from the north, the Kraken is a huge, sea-animal — so big sailors might take it for an island, and strong enough to pull a ship under. Later pictures give it long arms, like a giant or , though the old tales are older than those pictures. You will still meet it in books, films, and games; story-sailors shout to release the Kraken. Though actually, this is not a scientific animal. Real giant live in the deep sea, and that is probably what later were reaching for, but the Kraken itself belongs to myth and pop culture. We usually write it with a capital K when we mean that famous monster.
組成Borrowed from Norwegian kraken, the form with the, from krake — a crooked dead tree, or a wooden drag with hooks. That came from Old Norse kraki, something crooked with hooks, from an old Germanic root meaning crooked.
