KP is kitchen work that soldiers, or children at a camp, have to do: peeling vegetables, washing trays, sweeping the floor — the dull jobs, not the cooking that gets praise. In the US army, soldiers can be put on KP as a duty, and sometimes as a mild punishment. Summer camps borrowed the idea: each group takes a turn so the kitchen stays clean. It is informal American English. You will not see it on a restaurant menu; it is a chore, not a job title you apply for. People write KP or K.P. You go on KP; you do KP.
