Kosovo is a land in south-east Europe, between Serbia and . Most people there are Albanian; a smaller number are . For years it was a part of Serbia that could partly rule itself. In 1989 Serbia’s president, Slobodan Milosevic, took that away. In the 1990s some Albanians formed a fighting group, the KLA, to push for independence. In 1998–99 Serbian forces killed many Albanians, and NATO bombed Serbia. After the war, the United Nations ran Kosovo for a time. In 2008 Kosovo said it was an independent country. Many countries agree; Serbia does not, and neither do some others. So you will hear both “country” and “territory,” depending on who is talking. That fight over the name is still live. In English we say Kosovo, not “the Kosovo.” About two million people live there.
