Korea is a land in East Asia. For a long time it was one country. In 1948 it was split into two states: North Korea and South Korea. When people say “Korea” in everyday English, they often mean South Korea — Seoul, K-pop, the food you already know. News about the north almost always says North Korea, the full name. Both sit on the same peninsula, with China to one side and Japan across the sea. A war in the early 1950s never ended with a full peace paper, so the split is still how the map is drawn. Older English sometimes spelled the name Corea.

組成First written in English as Core (1598), from Dutch Core, itself from Portuguese. The spelling Corea was once common. Europeans in the 1500s borrowed the name from a Chinese reading of the old Korean name Goryeo (高麗); Hokkien Ko-lê matches the European vowels especially well. Goryeo was Korea’s official name from 918 to 1392.
