The Koran is the holy book of Islam. Muslims hold that it is the word of God, given to the Prophet Muhammad, and they recite it in Arabic in prayer even when they speak another language at home. In English you will also see Quran or Qur’an — spellings closer to the Arabic name, and the ones many people prefer now. Koran is the older English spelling; you still meet it in older books and in some dictionaries. It is one book, not a set of books, and people often say “the Koran.” Though actually, calling it “the Muslim Bible” is a lazy shortcut: it is not a copy of the Christian Bible, and that wording can sound careless.
