A kora is a West African instrument. It has twenty-one strings, and the body is a big hard gourd covered with skin. A long wooden neck holds the strings. People often call it a harp, and that is close enough: you play it with your fingers, and the sound is bright and rippling, like water over stones. It belongs especially to musical traditions in countries such as Mali, Guinea, Senegal, and the . A kora player may sing old stories and praise while playing. In English it is a specialist music word — you will see it on concert posters and album notes, not in everyday chat. Twenty-one strings is the classic kora; a look-alike with a different count may be a cousin, not the same instrument.
