The Kop is a stand — a big bank of seats — at Anfield, the home ground of Liverpool Football Club in England. The people there are usually the loudest home fans. Papers and supporters say “the Kop” as if it were a place with a soul, not just concrete. The name comes from Spion Kop, a hill in South Africa where a hard battle was fought; more than one British football stand was named after that hill because a packed crowd looks like a steep slope. Other clubs have a Kop too, but if someone just says the Kop in a football chat, they usually mean Liverpool’s. Though actually, for many years it was a standing terrace, packed tight. Now there are seats, but the name and the noise stayed. It is a fans’ proper name: capital K.
組成From Afrikaans kop “hill,” via Spion Kop, the battle hill. Dutch kop is related. The football stand is named after the shape of a crowd on a slope, not after a person called Kop.
