A koala is a small animal from Australia. It looks a little like a grey toy bear, with round furry ears and a big black nose, but it is not a bear, and it has no tail you can see. It lives in trees and eats the leaves of one kind of Australian tree (the one we call 尤加利). Koalas sleep many hours each day. People say koala bear in casual talk; scientists do not. The English word comes from Dharug, an Aboriginal language from the Sydney area: gula or gulawany. Though actually, the cute picture on a postcard hides a fussy eater that can be quite sharp-clawed if you try to hold it.
