A knockback is a no that you receive. Someone turns you down for a job, a place at school, a date, a loan, or an idea, and that refusal is the knockback. It is informal, more British and Australian than American. You take a knockback; you get a knockback. It can sting, but the word itself is everyday, not dramatic — closer to ‘they said no’ than to a tragedy. Though actually, to knock back a drink is a different use of the same bits: that means to drink it quickly. The noun here is only the rejection.
