A kludge is a computer program or system put together fast and in a messy way. It works — that is the whole point — but it is not clean, not pretty, and not built to last. People who write programs say it with a mix of shame and a little pride: “It is a kludge, but it runs.” You can also use it as a verb: to kludge something together means to force a rough fix, with extra bits of code and a hope that nobody looks too closely. Though actually, some people stretch it to any ugly fix, even outside computers — a chair held up with books, a cable tied in a knot. In careful tech talk it still mostly means software or a system. It is informal. You would not put it in a school essay unless you were talking about how real programmers work. Younger people may say “hacky” or “a rough workaround” instead, but kludge is the old, loved word for the same idea.
