The Klondike is a region in the Yukon, in north-west Canada. In the late 1890s gold was found there, and huge numbers of people rushed in to look for it. That rush is what the name still carries. You will meet it in history, films, and place names, always with a capital K when it is the place. If a lot of people hurry to one spot to do the same thing — a new shop, a new job, a sudden chance — English sometimes says the scene is like the Klondike. Though actually, the river and region names are older than the gold. English Klondike is a rough copy of Hän Tr'ondëk, “hammerstone water,” or Gwich'in throndiuk, “hammer-water,” not a tidy English meaning about gold. The word is first a place. The gold-rush feeling is what people borrow.
