1. 1

A klansman is a man who belongs to the Ku Klux Klan, the US group people often call the KKK. The Klan is a secret racist group in American history. It has used fear and violence, especially against Black people, and against others it wanted to shut out. The word is simply “the Klan’s man”: a member. You will meet it in history books, news, and films, not in friendly talk about clubs. It is a cold, factual label, not a title of honour. There is also klanswoman, though klansman has long been the usual form, and some writers now say Klan member to cover everyone. Though actually, it is easy to hear clan and think of a Scottish family group. That is a different door. A is a man in a clan. A klansman, with a k, is only for the Klan.
