Kismet means the things that will happen to you in your life — fate, the share that is given to you. People reach for it when they want a slightly story-like or romantic word for “it was meant to be”, not when a bus is late. It is not everyday English; fate and destiny are the plain words, and younger speakers may only know kismet from old films or playful talk. It came into English from Ottoman Turkish kısmet, and before that from Arabic qisma, a “division” or “lot”. Though actually, it is closer to “your portion” than to “luck”: luck can turn in a minute; kismet is the path of a life.
