Kirkwall is the main town of the Orkney Islands, north of mainland Scotland. It stands on the largest island, and this is where the islands’ local government is based. It is a small harbour town with a famous old cathedral, so visitors treat it as Orkney’s capital even when a book only calls it a town. The English spelling looks like kirk (church) plus wall, which feels tidy beside that cathedral. Though actually, that wall was never a wall: later speakers reshaped an older name that meant “church bay” — a church by a bay.
