Kingston is the capital of Jamaica. It is the island's largest city, its main port, and the centre of business — the place people mean when they talk of flying in, shipping goods, or government on the island. Though actually, the map is dotted with other Kingstons (a town on the Thames in England, and others in Canada, Australia, and the United States), because the name is simply 'the king's town'. This entry is the Jamaican one. Settlements outside England, including this city, were named in the British-Empire way: king's + -ton ('town'), for British monarchs. English Kingstons grew from Old English Cinges tūn or Cynges tūn, 'the king's town or manor'. Do not mix it up with Kingstown, a different city, even though the two names are old twins.
