A kingpin is the most important person in a group, especially one who controls everything and without whom the whole operation would fall apart. It's most often used for the leader of a criminal organization, like a drug kingpin, but people also use it more loosely for the key person in a business or plan. The word first meant a real physical pin - the central bolt that holds a wheel or machine part in place, or the front pin in bowling that everything else depends on.
