A kimono is a traditional Japanese piece of clothing: a long, loose robe with wide sleeves, wrapped left over right and held with a wide sash. People wear it at weddings, coming-of-age days, funerals, and festivals; everyday Japan now mostly wears Western clothes. It hangs like a long coat, but it is the whole outfit, not a coat over something else. Though actually, English speakers sometimes stretch kimono to mean any Japanese-looking robe, or even a dressing gown with a wide sleeve — shops do this. Strictly, a kimono is that wrapped Japanese robe, and a light summer cotton one is often a yukata, a cousin, not the full silk kimono.
