1. 1

Kigali is the capital city of Rwanda, a small inland country in East Africa, built over hills. The government sits there, and it is the country's biggest city. Visitors often notice how clean and ordered the streets look, compared with many capitals. Though actually, that picture is recent. In 1994 a huge number of people in Rwanda were murdered because of who they were. Kigali was in the middle of that history, and then it was rebuilt. The city in today's photos is not a city that had an easy past. When English speakers say Kigali, they mean this place, not the whole country.
