Kiev is the capital city of Ukraine. It sits on a long river, the Dnipro, so it is an important river port, not a city on the sea. Factories, offices, universities, and old churches are all there; it is the country's main city for work, government, and culture. English used to write Kiev, copying the Russian shape of the name. Ukraine asks the world to write Kyiv, which follows Ukrainian. Since the 2010s, and much more after 2022, many governments and newsrooms have switched. Older books, maps, and menus still say Kiev. Though actually, the city did not move — only which language English was copying. People also say Chicken Kiev for a fried chicken dish with butter inside; that is food named after the city, not another place.
