To kibosh something is to stop a plan, an idea, or a project so it cannot go any further. In real speech you will hear the noun much more than the verb: people put the kibosh on something. It is informal, a little old-fashioned, and a little colourful — the sort of thing a newspaper headline or a might say. Nobody is quite sure where it came from. Scholars now think it is probably a worn-down form of kurbash, an old word for a heavy whip, from Arabic and Ottoman Turkish; another story ties it to Irish words meaning “death cap.” Treat both as “perhaps.”
