Khartoum is the capital city of Sudan, in north-east Africa, where the Blue Nile and the White Nile meet. You will meet the name in geography and in the news. To many British people it still calls up a story from 1885: General Gordon was killed there in the Siege of Khartoum. That telling is older British history, and you will hear it more in Britain than in Taiwan. Though actually, Khartoum is a living city, not only a chapter in a textbook. South Sudan is a different country now, with a different capital, Juba — so “the capital of Sudan” does not mean the whole old map. As a place name the word is neutral; the Gordon story can sound like empire-history, which is one reason teachers in Taiwan may only need the geography first.
組成Possibly from Arabic خُرْطُوم (ḵurṭūm, “elephant trunk”), but more likely from Arabic قُرْطُم (qurṭum, “safflower”).
