The KGB was the secret police — and the spy service — of the former USSR, the old Soviet Union. Inside the country they watched people; outside it they ran spies. The word is famous, a little dark, and you will meet it in history, in spy films, and in the news when someone is talking about that era. It feels serious. The USSR ended in 1991, and the KGB was broken up; later Russian services have other names, even if films still say KGB when they mean “Soviet spies.” Though actually, people sometimes stretch “KGB” to mean any harsh secret police, the way they stretch other famous police names. That is loose talk, not the careful name.
