Kettling is a police way of controlling a protest. Officers form tight lines around a crowd and hold that ring, so the people inside cannot leave for a long time — sometimes hours. The police say it stops trouble spreading, keeps a street under control, or makes arrests easier later. People who are kettled often cannot reach a toilet, water, or their train home, and can get stuck in the ring too, which is why news stories and human-rights groups argue about it so much. The name comes from a kettle: the crowd is held in, like water that cannot get out of the pot. It is mainly a British news word that other countries have borrowed; you will not hear it in the kitchen. It is not friendly and not old-fashioned. It belongs to reports about demonstrations and the police. You will also hear it as a verb: the police kettled the crowd. Kettling is the name of the method.
